Much Ado About Monday {No.79}

And we're back with another edition of Much Ado About Monday!! Normally Jill would be hosting today, but currently she are her husband are 30,000 ft above us on their way to Norway. I have to admit I'm a bit jealous, but I'm so excited for them and know they are going to have a fabulous time. I can't wait to hear how their trip goes and know Jill will be sharing all the details when they get back. :)

{DIY} Coffee Filter Wreath

Happy Friday, Y'all! 
I can't believe we're actually getting some cool weather down here in Texas. It's finally enjoyable to bike my Kindergartener to and from school. And I was even super comfortable in my favorite pair of jeans today! Celebrating the little things... 

I just love this time of year. After living in the midwest, I'll always miss those awesome crisp fall days.  So for what Texas lacks in the fall department, I make up with fall decor. I'm allowed to pretend we have four seasons, right? Our entryway was missing something, so I decided to make this fall wreath, out of a simple household item: coffee filters! 

I fell in love with Emily's coffee filter wreath, and just had to make one for myself. She went with white filters, while I chose to tea-stain mine for a different look. I can't decide which one I like better! maybe I'll make a white one for spring :-)

Want to make one for yourself? It's super easy!

All you need is:
About 400 coffee filters
Tea bags (if staining)
Chopstick or screwdriver
Straw wreath form- I chose to go with a larger one, but any size works

First, if you plan on staining the coffee filters, set aside a few days for the process. I just brewed up a large pot of extra-strong tea (think 5 family size lipton tea bags for 3-4 inches of water), and soaked the coffee filters for a few minutes. I made sure to separate them before getting them wet. Afterwards, I hung them on a make shift clothes line system across my dining room. I wish I would have gotten a photo of 400 coffee filters line drying! You have to make sure they're completely dry before moving onto the next step.

Next, I took the coffee filter and placed my chopstick in the center. I wrapped the filter around the chopstick and jammed it into the straw wreath form. 

Because I wanted a dense wreath, I did this every half inch or so. It's more time-consuming, but definitely worth it in my eyes!

I made sure to only cover the face, outer diameter, and inner edges of the wreath with coffee filters, leaving the back plain. This way, it lays flat against the wall. 

Finish it off with a bow and admire how warm and welcoming it is!

I absolutely love how it turned out and can't wait to show you guys more of my fall decorations!

Much Ado About Monday (No. 78}

Party Time! 

Welcome to Much Ado About Monday!

Welcome everyone! We are so happy you could be here to join us for another fabulous edition of MAAM! 

This week was a super wet one for all of us in the Houston area. We had several days of hard rain and the kids were going a little stir-crazy from being cooped up. So Jamie and I decided to head the zoo with all the kiddos. We figured we may get a little wet, but it would be an adventure. It was the best zoo trip EVER! The rain stopped right when we arrived and we had the entire zoo to ourselves. I'm not kidding, we maybe saw 5 other families there the whole three hours we were there. It was awesome. We also got to watch a zoo keeper feed a clouded leopard by hand and got our own little lesson about these beautiful creatures.  It was definitely a trip to remember!

This week I shared with you guys this adorable Pretty in Peplum Dress {and top!} I made for my daughter. Such a fun and cute pattern to help fill out her fall wardrobe!

Pretty in Peplum Dress {Pattern Tester}

One of my favorite things to do is to test patterns for designers. I love being able to help out others who have the same passion that I do for sewing and I have found that since I have a deadline, I actually finish the projects within a reasonable time frame. If I run into a snag, I work through it instead of setting it aside for later. I thrive under pressure apparently.

 My most recent pattern test was for Abby over at Sew Much Ado. This was my second time testing one of her patterns {first time here} and I was so excited to make this adorable peplum dress for my daughter.

I was looking forward to making this dress for two reasons:  1- It's just beyond adorable and 2- It's entirely made with knit fabric. Somehow, I have managed to never make an outfit from a knit material. I think the idea terrified me.

I am so glad that I was able to overcome my fears and make this cute dress though. A big help was the thoughtful tips for sewing with knit fabrics that Abby included with the pattern. I didn't have any problems at all working the material. And bonus: no need for buttons or zippers! Which is great for little independent girl, who loves to dress herself with no help.

It was also kind of nice to not have the fabric fray or wrinkle. And it gave me a good excuse to buy some fun new accessories for my sewing machine. I used a double needle for the first time and I love how professional it makes all the hemmed edges look.

My daughter absolutely LOVES this dress. It's so comfortable and she felt so grown-up wearing it. After I took my pictures, she refused to take the dress off and wore it the rest of the day. Which is saying a lot since it was August in Texas and the dress has long sleeves. This dress is both comfy and stylish; the perfect combination. {I wish I had more clothes like that.}

The other great thing about this pattern is it's versatility. There are three sleeve lengths {short, 3/4, and long} and you have the option to make a top or a dress. I ended up making both.

For both the dress and the top, I used the 4T width with the 5T length, which fit my slender girl perfectly.

The top is just perfect for the coming fall. I can't wait to pair it with her skinny jeans and boots.

This pattern is available in sizes 18-24 months on up to 12 and it available on Etsy for instant download.

I am beyond thrilled with how my latest pattern test turned out. I was able to expand my sewing skills while making two awesome new items for my daughter's fall wardrobe, both of which she loves.

No wonder I love pattern testing so much!
