Calico Beans {Donna Sue's Special Recipe}

Whenever there is a get together with my husband's family, my mother-in-law's beans are requested. These things are absolutely amazing! She got the recipe from a friend over 20 years ago and has been making them ever since. Never have I had beans which contain sausage AND bacon. Yes. You read that correctly. Are you salivating yet?

Last weekend, I made this dish for my mother's birthday picnic and my family LOVED it. There were seventeen of us there, and somehow, we still had leftovers. Did I mention this recipe makes enough beans to satisfy a large number of hungry appetites? Well, it does. :)

Okay folks, enough jibber jabber. Let's get down to business. The recipe is below. I'm telling you, you MUST make these beans sometime soon. Seriously. You'll thank me.

Ingredients:
1 can lima beans
1 can green beans
1 can great northern beans
1 can kidney beans
1 can pork and beans
1 lb. sausage
1 cup chopped celery
2 diced onions
1 can tomato soup
1 cup brown sugar
2 Tbs. yellow mustard
1/2 tsp. chile powder
1 (8 oz) can tomato sauce
bacon

Directions:
1. Drain beans, except for pork and beans. Set aside.
2. In a large saucepan, brown sausage, celery and onion over medium heat. Drain fat. Add tomato soup, brown sugar, mustard and chile powder to pan. Stir until well mixed.
3. Add drained beans and tomato sauce to pan. Stir until hot and bubbly.
4. Pour beans into a large, oven proof dish. Cover with bacon and refrigerate overnight.
5. The next day, baked in 350 degree oven for one hour. Discard bacon when finished cooking. Serve hot and enjoy!

I guarantee these will be a hit at your next summer cookout! I'd love to know if you make them. :)
