Much Ado About Monday {No. 53}

Whew, this past week sure has flown by quickly. I've been spending all of my time getting into the routine of having a new little one around. Last week I introduced Taylor to you and then just like that she turned a week old. Even though it has only been a very short time, I feel like she has grown so much... I want to soak in as much of her squishy, snuggly goodness before it's too late and it is already moving too fast for me.

And I wasn't the only one who was busy. Lydia was chosen to be a pattern tester for this incredibly cute Schoolboy Vest and she did an amazing job with it!! Make sure to stop by and check it out. :)

Schoolboy Vest {Pattern Tester}

This post has been featured at:

A few weeks ago I was honored to be chosen as a pattern tester for Abby over at Sew Much Ado. It was my first time ever to test a pattern out and I was equal parts nervous, excited, intimidated, and just plain happy. I LOVE trying out new patterns and new projects. And to be able to make a brand new pattern for someone who loves sewing as much as I do...dream come true moment, guys. {yes, I really do love sewing that much.}

To top it off, the pattern she was having us test was a darling schoolboy vest pattern, perfect for my little man, who never gets projects sewn for him. He doesn't ever complain {because he is super sweet and also because he is two and is usually more interested in trains} but when I told him I was making him a vest, he just beamed and beamed.

Like this!

Since Easter is coming up, I decided to make the vest out of seersucker because, honestly, it doesn't get much more spring than that. Plus, every Southern gentleman {no matter his size} needs something in seersucker.

The vest turned out SO. CUTE.

And it is very professional looking with the back tie, which turned out to be super simple to do but had a huge impact. I love this little detail.

I tested out the faux welt pockets and they are adorable! I can't wait to make another vest and make the real welt pockets. It will be my first attempt but Abby's instructions are super clear so I am not worried in the slightest.

Another thing I really liked about this pattern is that it catered to my neurosis. I am not a big fan of buttons because I am always worried that I will not have them spaced evenly. I would rather put in a hundred zippers than four buttons. True story. BUT there is an awesome buttonhole guide, so all the guess work is taken out of spacing. It was really easy to figure out and came out perfectly!

My little man loves this vest. It was the easiest photo shoot EVER because he was just so giddy in his new "stripe-y vest".

Now that I have his Easter vest complete, I am going to start working on one for his ring bearer outfit for my brother's wedding in May.

The pattern for the schoolboy vest is available on Etsy for instant download and comes in sizes 6 m- 12 years. And don't think that boys are the only ones who would want a vest! Several other testers made this same patterns for their little girls and it was so stinking cute.

Now that I have one pattern testing under my sewing belt, I am hooked. I can't wait to try some more! And if my son has anything to say about it, more little boys' patterns.

And another little Huckleberry Arrives!!

As most of you know, I was expecting a new baby this month, and at four days overdue our little bundle arrived! We didn't know what we were having so after much waiting and anticipation, I am thrilled to announce....

IT'S A GIRL!!

Taylor Rhae
8lbs 5oz ~ 20.75"

As with all of my girls (I now have three) I didn't find out what they were going to be beforehand. I love the element of surprise and the moments of finding out who I am holding in my arms are by far the most precious of memories. My husband told me with each girl and hearing him introduce me with tears in his eyes will stick with me forever.

Taylor is the sweetest little girl and we have all fallen completely in love with her. The girls adore her. My little Brynn has announced her as her 'best friend' and 'Princess Taylor'. Jaydn has taken over full on mommy duty and is constantly doting on her, rubbing her head, talking to her and singing her sweet songs. It melts my heart to watch them all together and I can't wait to watch them grow up as best friends.

As she is still so new, some of our family is still here visiting. So, next week when everyone is gone and my hubby is back to work, will be full of adjustments. I am looking forward to us finding our routine and enjoying all the wonderful changes that will ensue.

But, until I have to think about that too much I am spending time snuggling, loving on and just being in awe of the miracle that is my beautiful baby girl!

Registering for Baby 101 {Tips and Tricks to Creating the Best Registry for your Baby}

As some of you may know, we {the four ladies behind Huckleberry Love} all met through a Moms Group on meetup.com almost four years ago. We've been so incredibly fortunate to have made strong, lasting friendships with each other and the other Moms in our group. In fact, our group is still around today and our kids have become the best of friends! It's been a huge blessing to us all.

Recently, Lydia and I were discussing individuals we knew who had registered for "all the wrong things" when it came to their first baby registry. Then it dawned on me, there are MANY women out there who don't really know what to register for! They may not have friends or family who can help them register, so they idly walk around Target with a gun scanning any cute baby outfit that pops up in front of them. That, my friends, is not how you register for a baby!

So, I asked the other Moms in our group to spill the beans on what baby items they could NOT live without. There are {almost} 26 kids between the 10 of us, so these women definitely know what they're talking about! (The following links are affiliate links. You are not charged a fee when clicking on them, but we will receive a small amount of compensation which helps us keep our site up and running if you do choose to click. Thank you for supporting us!)

Registry Must Haves

1. Aden and Anais Swaddling Blankets- These blankets are lifesavers. They're soft, thin and large- great for wrapping baby up, to cover up while nursing or as a nighttime blanket once your little one gets older.
2. Boppy (or other nursing pillow, such as My Breast Friend)- If you plan on nursing, you will need a nursing pillow. Bring it to the hospital to use once baby has been born, and be sure to order extra covers for when baby spits up.
3. Pack 'n Play- An absolute must. I prefer the ones with the vibrating bassinet and changing table for when baby is rooming in with you. It makes things much easier for you and more comfortable for baby. Also, this is an item that you will use for YEARS!
4. Pacifier- Even  if you are convinced that your child will not need a pacifier, it's worth the $5 to atleast infest in a two-pack of these little gems! I prefer the NUK brand, but really it's your preference. Be sure to sterilize them and throw them in your hospital bag to have on hand once baby is born.
5. Portable Bouncer and/or Swing- Another lifesaver. One of my boys was a bouncer addict, the other was obsessed with his swing. They make very large stationery swings, but they're huge and take up a lot of space- a luxury we don't have in my small home. The portable swing/bouncer is great for moving baby around from room to room with you.
6. Changing Pad (with multiple covers)- These days you don't need a changing table, as much as a changing pad. They make a whole slew of varieties, but the contoured pads with the no slide bottoms are very popular with our Mommas. Be sure to order extra covers for those blow outs!
7. Diapers- I cannot stress this enough. Register for diapers. Say it with me, REGISTER FOR DIAPERS! Your baby will go through a box of diapers in a few days. These puppies are a money suck, but an absolute necessity. Trust me, you WANT to register for diapers.
8. Summer Infant SwaddleMe Wraps- One of the best items I ever registered for were these Swaddles. They just came out with a new zippered design that I ordered for my third little one and I can't wait to try it out!
9. Ergo Carrier (or other type of Sling or Wrap)- Everyone prefers something different when it comes to a baby carrier. Do your research and decide what is best for you (and your hubby) when it comes to baby carrying. Me? I love my Hava Sling, but other Mommas swear by their Ergo or Moby Wrap. Regardless of what you choose, it will make trips to the store, long walks and outings much easier when you're able to wear your little one.
10. Nursing Pads- There is nothing worse than waking up in the middle of the night and having your shirt, bra and sheets covered in milk that leaked from your breasts. Nothing. Be sure to have a huge stock of these puppies on hand at all times.
11. Lanolin Nipple Cream- Nursing hurts. Raw nipples hurt more. Put a tube of this in your hospital bag, along with the above mentioned nursing pads. You'll thank me later.
12. Bumbo- Once your baby is a little older, you will love putting them in the Bumbo. It's great to use to help baby sit up, but to also read stories, feed your little munchkin, or just to play a game of patty cake.
13. Temporal Artery Thermometer- So much better than trying to use a regular old thermometer rectally or in the armpit. You get an extremely accurate reading within seconds. You will want to kiss this little miracle machine the first time your little one gets a fever.
14. Sleep Sheep- My two year-old still falls asleep with his. There are four different sound features to choose from to help baby drift off to sleep. Added bonus: it's cute and cuddly!
15. Nighttime Turtle- Another awesome product that you will use for years. My 4 year-old still uses his every night. He loves to look at the stars as he falls asleep. :)
16. Fischer-Price Healthy Care Deluxe Booster- If you don't want to invest in a high chair (or simply don't have the space), this Booster is awesome! Strap it onto one of your kitchen table chairs so that baby can sit at the table with you. It's also small and compact, making it easy to take to restaurants so that you're not stuck using one of their dirty high chairs.

Honorable Mentions: Baby snap t-shirts, White onesies, Glider or Rocking Chair, Nose Frida, Medela Microwave Steam Bags, Bottles and Bottle Warmer, Dishwasher Basket, Drying Rack, Infant Bath Tub

Obviously the above is not all that you would register for. They're just items that we could not live without once we had our babies. There are many great registry lists out there- be sure to utilize one when you're registering!

Tips for Registering
*Don't be afraid to register for expensive items. Adding a quality breast pump, stroller, car seat or even nursery furniture is a GOOD thing! Many times your friends or family members will pool their money together to buy you a large ticket item. So go ahead and add a few more expensive items to your list, you never know what someone may want to get for you!
*Try not to register at more than two stores. People can get overwhelmed looking at multiple baby registries. Most stores will have just about everything you need.
*An add-on to the above point, don't assume that the only items a certain store carries is what you see in their actual store. Be sure to check out their website. For instance, Target has a whole slew of items that they only sell online. Take a look at what their online selection has to offer, you'll be pleasantly surprised.
*Try not to register for too many clothes or toys. As much as you want to register for every adorable, teeny, tiny outfit that you see, resist the urge. Most of the time, people will buy clothes based on what they think is cute, not what you have on your registry. The same goes for toys.
* Be practical. This doesn't need too much explanation. You'll know what something is a bit over the top. Try and use your better judgment. ;)
* Do your research. You may be tired and it will definitely feel overwhelming, but this is your baby we're talking about. Research items. Find out what things you feel will fit best with your lifestyle and which items you really won't need. Every baby is different. Every family is different. Discover what will work best for you.

Tricks of the Trade
* Use your registry to keep track of what you need to buy, even after your shower has been thrown. It's a great way to see what items you still need to check off your list. Every time I would personally buy something for my baby, I'd add it to my registry (if it wasn't all ready on there), or I'd mark it as "bought.". Your pregnancy-addled mind will be happy to have all of that information there right in front of you, so that you won't forget that you all ready have a bathtub or two car seat bases.
* Be sure to check out second hand stores (and local consignment sales), such as Once Upon a Child for barely used or new items. There are usually a great assortment of barely used swings, bouncers, and baby clothes just waiting to be purchased at these places. Don't overlook them, especially if you're trying to save a bit of money!
* Register for neutral items. The minute you find out you're having a girl, resist the urge to go out and buy every pink or purple item that you come across! Later down the road you may have a little boy and I guarantee you won't want to be pushing him around in a pink stroller.
* Don't forget about you! You're important too, Mama! Be sure to treat yourself to a few quality nursing bras and nursing tops. You'll want to feel comfortable and will enjoy the convenience of these items once baby arrives.

Hopefully this post has helped you a bit with the anxiety that comes along with registering for baby! We all know that it can be an anxiety-ridden, overwhelming experience, but it should also be a fun one. You're preparing for the arrival of a new life! Just remember to give yourself plenty of time to get ready- don't wait until the last minute! :)

DIY Sparkle Dough {Tutorial}

A few weeks ago I shared with you my daughters 4 year old Rainbow Birthday Party. Because her party was rainbow themed I thought the perfect party favours would be some balls of sparkly playdough in a bunch of rainbow colours! She was very excited about the idea and was even more thrilled when she realized how much she would be able to participate in the making of it.

This dough is incredibly simple to make and another great thing about it is, if one of your kiddos gets into a 'hungry' mood while playing with it, it is completely 100% edible (if you forgo the glitter). Every ingredient used to make it, you can find in your pantry. I'm not saying it's going to taste very good (because it's not), but at least you know your child isn't ingesting any weird preservatives or any dangerous ingredients for that matter. :)

Can't Get Started Without:
~4 c. all purpose flour
~1 c. iodized table salt
~1/2 c. cream of tartar
~1/4 c. oil (I used canola oil)
~4 c. water
~gel food colouring (I find it easier to work with than the liquid stuff)
~coloured glitter
*the coloured glitter makes this recipe un-edible, if you skip this step, the dough is 100% safe to ingest*
1. In a large pot, whisk together the flour, salt and cream of tartar. Then add your water and oil.

2. Keep whisking everything until your mixture is smooth and fairly lump free. If there are a few odd lumps, don't fret, they will disappear as your mixture begins to cook.

3.Turn your burner to medium heat and begin to cook your mixture. Stir continually. (I would recommend using a wooden spoon if you have one as it won't stick to your dough the way plastic or metal will). Your mixture will begin to thicken and look quite lumpy, don't worry though, just keep on stirring and everything will turn out perfectly. :)
4. Your mixture will eventually become quite thick and will look like very soft dough. You can now remove your pot from the heat. Stir the dough a bit more once it's removed from the heat and you will notice that there are no more lumps remaining. Wahoo!

Next scoop your dough out of the pot and onto a cutting mat or placemat. The dough will be quite warm, but you should still be able to handle it. Start to knead your dough. It's actually really nice to play with at this point because it is so warm and soft. The oil in the dough also prevents it from sticking to your hands.

Because I wanted to make multiple colours of dough, I seperated my dough into 6 evenly sized balls.

Once they were seperated, it was time to colour them. I just flattened out each ball and put in a bit of gel food colouring. Then I just kneaded the dough a bit more until the colour was fully dispersed throughout each ball of dough. I was really impressed with how efficiently the colour mixed into the dough. The more I kneaded the more food colouring came off of my hand and ended up in the dough.

If you choose to forgo the glitter, you could just stop here and you would have some awesome coloured dough to play with. Or, if you want your dough to sparkle, let's move on...

To make your dough sparkly all you have to do is add glitter. I happened to have bought a pack of different coloured glitters at Michael's a while ago with no real project in mind for them. They worked perfectly for this project however, because I had a different glitter to match each colour of dough. To each ball of dough I added about a tsp. of coloured glitter.

Then all I did was knead my dough again and the sprinkles worked there way into it, in effect creating.... Sparkle Dough! It is so pretty. :)

The next few steps I took are completely optional as they were done only to create favour bags for the party. If you are making the dough solely for yourself then you are done! Good job, now go and get creative. :)

If you've chosen to create favour bags as well, then here are the next few things I did.

First I figured out how many kids I needed to make favour bags for and then seperated the big ball of dough into smaller pieces. They weren't perfectly even, but whose paying that close of attention. ;) Then once I had all the pieces of dough I needed, I rolled each piece into little balls.

This is where Jaydn came in very helpful as that was a lot of little balls to roll!!

Once we had all of our little balls rolled out, we stuffed little sandwich sized zip bags with ball of each colour into them.

Then I used an image I found and enhanced on pic monkey and print and cut it on my Silhouette Cameo. I attached it to the sandwich bags filled with Sparkle Dough and voila! perfect party favours. :)

Ingredients:
~4 c. all purpose flour
~1 c. iodized table salt
~1/2 c. cream of tartar
~1/4 c. oil (I used canola oil)
~4 c. water
~gel food colouring
~coloured glitter

Directions:
1. Stir all ingredients together in a large pot.
2. Cook at medium heat while stirring continuously, until mixture thickens into a dough.
3. Remove dough from heat and place onto a cutting mat.
4. Knead dough  until desired consistency.
5. Separate dough and add food colouring and coloured glitter as desired.

Have you ever made homemade play dough? What other fun projects do you like to do with your kiddos?
